Managing Value Management
A 3-Day Advanced Value Management Seminar
( Approved by the CVS Certification Board as a Module II Course*)

Course Description
Knowing how to do Value Engineering is one thing. Organizing and managing VE for solid bottom line contributions in cost effectiveness performance, productivity improvement and other management initiatives is a separate and imperative issue. The focus of Managing Value Management is on how to effectively move VE into the main stream of the organization with emphasis on how to become an active contributor to the success of the organization's business plans. The seminar is structured as a series of lectures supported by case studies with active participation encourage by the attendees. The lectures will be supplemented by video's and team problems. This seminar offers an excellent opportunity for participants to share experiences, raise issues and discuss resolution approaches.

Value Engineering Workshop Seminar
A 5-Day Learning and Applying VM Methodology Workshop.
(A CVS Certified approved Module I course)

Course Description
Value Engineering is a problem (or opportunity) solving methodology that can be applied to any product or process development stage. The methodology is configured as a building block structure where the participants move from divergent thinking (right brain) to convergent thinking (left-brain) in the resolution of the assigned project. This course is a “live” learning and doing experience in which the participants apply the value methodology principles learned to a real project. The workshop seminar format is structured as VE Task Teams. The team participants will devote approximately 50% to tutorial. The remaining time will focus on the application in the search for the resolution of the team project. Training through live, or cast study projects, allows the participants to directly apply the tutorial portion of the workshop to situations they will encounter in their work environment. The expense of the training portion should therefore be considered an investment to achieve the goals of the assigned “live” project.

This course is offered as a continuous 5 day event, or split into 2 sessions over a 2 week period.

Key Topics

  • Information Phase – Defining the problem (or opportunity), establishing performance goals, identifying and evaluating performance attributes, project (event) planning, gathering related information, creating a function model (FAST)
  • Speculation, or Creative Phase – Brainstorming for ideas (not solutions) to resolve the project issues
  • Planning, or Evaluation Phase – Discussing and screening ideas to capture the best proposal candidates. Creating a proposal menu
  • Execution, or Development Phase – Developing and evaluating proposals to resolve the project issues
  • Presentation phase – Formatting the recommended proposal(s) as a business case, develop a presentation strategy, present proposal to stake holders

Function Analysis System Technique (FAST) System Technique (FAST)
A 2-Day Hands-on Workshop Learning and Doing Experience

Course Description
FAST is a powerful mapping technique that graphically models projects, products and processes in function terms. As a graphical display FAST is ideally suited for exploring complex issues by interdisciplinary task teams. FAST identifies, in a step-by-step method, required functions and the means to arrive at those functions. Since problems are rarely single dimensioned, the language of FAST, using simple active verbs and measurable nouns, allows team members to effectively communicate and resolve intricate technical and managerial issues. The seminar is formatted as a series of lectures, with active participation encouraged in a team environment. Approximately 35% of the workshop will be devoted to tutorial. The remaining 65% of the time will be devoted to application and assessment. Working in small teams the participants will progress from simple hardware examples, to a product evaluation, to a complex non-hardware abstract problem, using FAST to resolve the problem issues. A variety of FAST business cases and examples will be displayed and discussed.

The most effective performance teams are those made up of interdisciplinary participants that reflect the complexity of the project issues. FAST is ideal to use as the operating process to effectively resolve the team’s project issues.
